SUMMARY:The new parody satire defence
DTSTART:20070412T190000Z
DTEND:20070412T200000Z
DESCRIPTION:The December 2006 amendments to the Copyright Act introduced a new defence to copyright infringement: fair dealing for parody or satire. Defences relating to parody can be found in other jurisdictions, including the US and member countries of the European Union. The defence for satire may be unprecedented.\n\nThe litigation between Channel Nine and Channel Ten over the use of excerpts from Nine’s programs in Ten’s program ‘The Panel’ involved parody and satire but was over before the defence was introduced. Would it have made a difference?\n\nRichard Cobden SC will address this and other aspects of the new defence.
